Our horrific experience with Orange Coast Plumbing (Irvine)

Living in Orange County, it’s not easy to find good contractors. Sometimes, even the simplest of tasks can go wrong. I recently hired Orange Coast Plumbing to install the shower fixtures after my shower was remodeled. This is typically a very simple job which mostly involves screwing things into place…

I honestly don’t understand how even a novice plumber could make so many mistakes:

  1. The trim plate (escutcheon) was not installed flush with the tile, and the handle wasn’t inserted all the way in. With some usage of the handle it will eventually detach from the tile and water would seep in between the tile and the trim plate.
  2. Poor and messy caulk job.
  3. Sealed the weep holes at the bottom.
  4. Did not ask me which color caulk to use.

Here’s a few photos:

Note how the trim plate is not flush with the tile, and the handle is sticking out with the threading exposed.
You can also see some of the foam from the back of the plate exposed here.

Weep hole at the bottom of the trim plate was plugged.

Took the trim plate off, it’s rendered useless as it was caulked on the inside.

What’s worse is how they treated me when I called to complain. They accused me of being a liar, of installing the tile myself and trying to cover up for myself, and bullied me for an hour on the phone while refusing to provide a refund.

After receiving the invoice in the email, I also realized the plumber snuck in this verbiage:

“No warranty on on valve or against leaks due to improper rough in”

What kind of licensed plumber would do a job that they know would leak and cause damage to the owner’s home??

Granted, it’s my fault for blindly signing it. I was presented an iPad with a giant signature box and told that I’m simply signing for “completion of work”.

Lesson of the day – do not sign anything for a contractor, and most definitely not on a tablet. Have them print it out, read it carefully and know your rights – you are not obliged to sign anything. If you’re in California, file a complaint with the CSLB.
